The Use of a Bismuth-based Teat Seal and the Bacteriocin Lacticin 3147 to Prevent Dry Period Mastitis in Dairy Cows

Mastitis in dry cows has traditionally been controlled with long-acting intramammary antibiotic formulations. However, the widespread use of antibiotics, particularly for prophylactic application, is likely to be restricted in the future. As a consequence, there is now a growing requirement for effective alternatives to prevent mastitis. A bismuth-based, intramammary teat seal has recently been shown to be as effective as “dry cow” antibiotic therapy for the prevention of new dry period infections. A new prototype formulation containing the bacteriocin, lacticin 3147 and teat seal has also been shown to be effective in controlling Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus using experimental infection models both in nonlactating and lactating dairy cows.
